PostSubject: Amateur AMVs, or maybe...   Amateur AMVs, or maybe... Icon_minitimeSun Sep 01, 2013 12:07 am

This might be a pretty silly topic to create, but it's been bugging me for many years and I just have to listen to the opinions of as many other people as possible. What follows might make absolutely no sense to you, regardless I would like to know everyone's view on the matter. If you are in a hurry or you get bored easily, please skip this topic ^^

It's been a fact that times have changed, regarding the AMVmaking community of YouTube. Everyone nowadays starts as a regular pro, AE/Sony Vegas with plugins, ready to create a masterpiece right from the start. Thing is most starters tend to create lifeless AMVs, practising with effects rather than the basics of sync or flow, but that's another story. Five to six years ago, when I first began to use the internet like a maniac, amateur/new editors had a completely different way of starting their career. The average editing standards back then were way lower than what they are today, thus most of them started with Windows Movie Maker, which later on got outclassed by Sony Vegas, causing "intense", rather silly debates, leading us to the present situation.

The main point of this topic are the AMVs that came out during that time period, when editing was rarer and only a handful of people (on YouTube at least, I was pretty young back then so I don't know exactly how things were outside of it) were dedicated editors. Videos that today truly CAN'T BE CREATED because noone starts with the editing software that "promotes" them. And people may ask at this point, "Newbies nowadays can start higher up the ladder and evolve at a faster pace, what's your problem?". Thing is, I really adore some of the old-style, newbie AMVs. There is no other way I can express my feelings. Not all of them of course, that would be impossible, but some of them provide me with entertainment most proffesional videos of today can't. And the funny thing is, most editors back then wouldn't create more than 10 videos before quitting, it was just a trend before AMVs became mainstream. I am open minded enough to be able to enjoy a video even if it isn't HD and has pixels (because there are people who would deny to even watch it) and I wonder if it's just a fetish or other people have similar experiences. I am not snobbing the new generation, but this is the truth.

I will post some of them down below, feel free to watch any of them and tell me if you like them. I have watched each of them countless times, I am really curious to listen to your opinions on the subject.

hmm.. I believe this is because you (and others having the same experience) were very proud editors back in the day. Which is why you might not really appreciate something "new school" since it is not what you used to enjoy and was a big part of your life back then.
As for me I do not like old-school type of AMVs. (perhaps its because I only started editing recently). I Believe simplicity is one thing, but being ignorant of technology is another. Since there are ways to make a good AMV with technology, and ways to get HQ footage instead of pixelated ones. Therefore I tend to not watch anything that shows inability.
About flow and amv key factors for newbies these days. I Agree that this is 1 thing our generation is inferior to the classic 1 with. 1st AMVs holding 0 concept is sad. I mean I understand that a 1st AMV might not hold any form of "good" editing, but why no concept? its a 1st time editing... not a 1st time putting human brain to use :/

@Schrod7 I agree things have changed dramatically, the standards you can even see from view counts, that old and bad amvs have millions of views, simply because they are old and good for their time, I do like old amvs myself, the ones you presented however I feel are just anime played with music on top. things have changed for the better editing wise imo. oldschool guys it will never be the same again, you have to just live with it, just cherish the memories you had.
the old amvs I started watching were things like this:

Spoiler:

still not that oldschool, but hey I've been into amvs past 2 years or less

@gabber, I hate this passion you have for concept because its something "pro's" use to judge an amv on how good it is. yes its something that gets thrown around on forums, but if you tell me the videos have a concept, or the editors themselves seem to think they have a concept, their talking some bullshit literature crap.

no concept:

Funny thing is, I wasn't an editor back then while I was first watching those. But those AMVs got me into anime and editing in general. And it's not like I don't enjoy new, proffesional editing, but some amateur new school is truly yuck, a miasma that I can't describe with words, all hail the I-MUST-GAIN-SUBS-QUICKLY ideology.

I think those editors were people with good editing potential that got bored of it, simply because they were unlucky enough to start editing too early, before it became a trend and new possibilities opened for it (Sony Vegas keygens anyone?). I see sync in these particular videos, but for the most AMVs of that style you are right, pixels + whole episode without a single cut = sucky sucky.

With good will and a little bit of fantasy, uncut subtitles become text, and there you have the first ASMVs -> INCEPTION

the thing that got me into AMVs was the fact I would search for example...
goku vs frieza
ichigo vs grimmjow

and all they give me is fucking amvs, why!!??!! :@

As for me, maik gave me his lights and taught me some things in editing :) and my videos are the results of the ideology i adopted through my conversations with maik (i don't know how he thinks about amvs though xD) You could say that my videos do not originally represent those of an "editor" but i think of them as complete amvs (and for me a complete amv is that with a story/concept)

You misunderstand the definition of concept. when you see me saying concept I am definitely not talking about a story. The concept of a video is basically the idea behind it. Like? Take Maik's I Can't Wait for example. seems extremely random right? But for me it has a clear idea/concept which is having a long video showing off editing skills. Another concept could be to be random on purpose like Creed's vid.
I don't have a passion for concepts. However I want to be able to know what the author is trying to show me. Showing his editing skills? okay. Showing an interesting mix of a lot of anime? okay. Showing the epicness of one piece (or any other anime) ? okay. showing a story? okay. But making something the editor himself does not know what it is? waste of time and youtube space. Like?

Second that :3 I really miss watching AMVs in 2005-2007.
And yeah me too, like crookz I started watching AMVs after searching "X vs. Y" and stumbling of AMVs instead of the actual scenes xD

Thread reminded me of my wmm times. x'D

As for the AMVs you posted, the second one is cool(the only one i checked, lol). I can see what he did there plus Zabuza adds quality in an AMV just be being there. Amateur AMVs, or maybe... 2228474649

When i hear "good old school AMVs" i don't really think of these to be honest.
I think some good edits without many "flashy stuff", for example:

I mean yea sometimes i feel like watching these old wmm amvs (or i just watch mine older wmm amvs) but i wouldn't prefer them over good old stuff.

Yes, the whole point of the topic was to see whether anyone shares my newbie WMM AMV fetish or not (and it seems like the feelings vary). Those I posted are in no case "good" AMVs by any standards, old or new, even though I totally love them regardless of that fact Amateur AMVs, or maybe... 3598429073
